The company and the Nix world
Flox was built to solve the problems the D. E. Shaw group’s developers faced adopting Nix at scale, was spun out as a company, and has announced two funding rounds (Series A in February 2023, Series B in September 2025) without stating amounts on the pages read here. Its CLI is open source under GPL-2.0, and it describes its relationship to the Nix community as inseparable from its mission (https://flox.dev/about/, https://flox.dev/blog/about-our-series-b/).
This page is drawn from https://flox.dev/about/, https://flox.dev/blog/announcing-flox/, https://flox.dev/blog/why-we-built-flox/, https://flox.dev/blog/announcing-the-flox-open-beta/, https://flox.dev/blog/about-our-series-b/, https://flox.dev/case-studies/, https://github.com/flox/flox and the Flox blog posts cited inline (all fetched 2026-11-04). Everything here is what Flox says about itself. Where the pages disagree or are silent, the text says so with [verify]. This guide is unofficial.
Origin
Flox’s About page: “Flox was originally built to solve the problems the D. E. Shaw group’s developers faced adopting Nix at scale. It quickly proved invaluable and became one of the largest and most impactful enterprise deployments of Nix.” (https://flox.dev/about/). The Series B post adds the detail: co-founder Michael Brantley “had already built Flox v0.1, a Nix-based toolchain that was easy to use and well-adapted to the enterprise needs of the D. E. Shaw group”, and CEO Ron Efroni and Brantley “worked together to spin Flox out of the D. E. Shaw group” (https://flox.dev/blog/about-our-series-b/). The About page lists Ron Efroni as CEO and Michael Brantley as CTO (https://flox.dev/about/).
Say: “Flox started as an internal Nix tool at a quantitative investment firm and became a product.”

Funding, as Flox states it
- Series A. The 2023 post announces “a Series A funding round led by NEA, with participation from Hetz Ventures, Addition, and angels” including Thomas Dohmke, Guy Podjarny and James Turnbull (https://flox.dev/blog/announcing-the-flox-open-beta/).
- Series B. “Flox has raised our Series B funding round, led by Addition, with participation from NEA, the D. E. Shaw group, Hetz Ventures, and Illuminate Financial” (https://flox.dev/blog/about-our-series-b/).
- Investors on the About page. DESCOvery (the D. E. Shaw group’s venture studio), NEA, Hetz Ventures and Addition Ventures, plus angels (https://flox.dev/about/). Illuminate Financial is named in the Series B post but not on the About page [verify whether the About page is simply out of date].
- Amounts. Neither the Series A post nor the Series B post gives a dollar figure [verify before quoting any amount; do not repeat figures from press or databases as Flox’s own].
- What the money is for. Three areas: the core platform (especially AI and GPU workloads), “Make compliance effortless”, and a path toward “truly secure application infrastructure” (https://flox.dev/blog/about-our-series-b/).
Customers and case studies
Flox’s evidence, in order of how much it shows:
| Customer | What Flox says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| D. E. Shaw group | Relies on Flox “to power its global trading and research infrastructure” | https://flox.dev/blog/about-our-series-b/ |
| PostHog | “Before, our local dev guide comprised 16 steps with 14 caveats. Now, it’s just a universal flox activate.” | https://flox.dev/blog/about-our-series-b/, https://flox.dev/ |
| Fellow.ai | Case study dated 2026-05-11; Flox is the “foundation” for reproducible local dev, rolled out as an option that most engineers adopted | https://flox.dev/case-studies/how-fellow-ai-ships-faster-with-flox/ |
| Resolve AI | Case study dated 2026-06-01; “works on my machine” issues turned into “are you using Flox?” | https://flox.dev/case-studies/how-resolve-ai-eliminated-works-on-my-machine/ |
| RxBenefits | A senior database engineer is quoted praising Flox’s reproducibility and cross-platform reach | https://flox.dev/blog/about-our-series-b/ |
- Scale claims. The Series B post says Flox passed “over 300 organizations using Flox” early in 2025 (https://flox.dev/blog/about-our-series-b/). The home page says “Trusted by Fortune 20 firms, Tier 1 banks, and leading AI companies” and names no customers in that line (https://flox.dev/). Ask Flox for a current reference list [verify].
- Nix in the Wild. Flox publishes a series of stories about Nix users, including Antithesis, SysEleven, Bellroy, Ockam and PDT Partners (https://flox.dev/nixinthewild/). These are Nix adopters Q and A write-uped by Flox. The pages read here do not say they are Flox customers, so do not present them as such [verify].
Say: “Two named case studies from 2026, a quantitative-finance origin, and a claim of hundreds of organizations. Ask for references that match your stack.”
Open source
- The CLI is open source. “The Flox CLI is licensed under the GPLv2.” (https://raw.githubusercontent.com/flox/flox/main/README.md). The GitHub API reports license GPL-2.0, the repository created 2022-12-22, and 4,192 stars on 2026-11-04 (https://api.github.com/repos/flox/flox). The repo welcomes contributions through a contributor guide (https://raw.githubusercontent.com/flox/flox/main/README.md).
- What is not in that licence. The CLI’s licence says nothing about FloxHub or the Flox Catalog services; the 2023 post said Flox would open source “key parts” of its tooling (https://flox.dev/blog/announcing-flox/). Which hosted parts are closed is not stated on the pages read [verify].
- Related repos. The README links https://github.com/flox/flox-skills for AI coding agents (https://raw.githubusercontent.com/flox/flox/main/README.md). The org also hosts a
nixpkgsrepository under the MIT licence, and the docs call it a “non-destructive fork” of nixpkgs (https://api.github.com/orgs/flox/repos, https://flox.dev/docs/concepts/package-groups).
How Flox relates to the NixOS community
Flox’s public stance is consistent across years:
- 2022: “Nix is in our DNA”, with commitments to support Nix through “direct contributions to the NixOS Foundation, open source, sponsorships, evangelizing and organizing events” (https://flox.dev/blog/announcing-flox/).
- 2023: “flox is nothing without the Nix community” (https://flox.dev/blog/announcing-the-flox-open-beta/).
- 2025: “Flox succeeds only if Nix succeeds, and we’re committed to making sure both do.” (https://flox.dev/blog/about-our-series-b/).
- Additive, not a fork of Nix. The README: Flox “is additive to Nix, not a replacement” (https://raw.githubusercontent.com/flox/flox/main/README.md). See Nix 101 for Flox people.
- Foundation roles. In 2022 and 2023 posts the CEO appears as a NixOS Foundation board member (https://flox.dev/blog/thank-you-nixcon/, https://flox.dev/blog/nixcon-2023-recap-videos/). A 2025 post calls him “NixOS Foundation President Ron Efroni” (https://flox.dev/blog/gonna-be-at-scale-22x-beam-onto-planet-nix/). The foundation is called both “NixOS Foundation” and “Nix Foundation” across Flox posts, and current roles are not confirmed on the pages read [verify].
- A place where the roles differ. For CUDA, Flox says NVIDIA’s terms need “an unambiguous, legally accountable entity” and that the Nix Foundation, as a non-profit, “can’t easily be brought into alignment” with them, so Flox holds the licence while the packages are built from upstream Nixpkgs recipes and usable by Nix users (https://flox.dev/blog/the-flox-catalog-now-contains-nvidia-cuda/, https://flox.dev/blog/deploying-hardened-flox-nvidia-cuda-stacks-in-minutes-not-hours/).
Events and community

The 2026 post says PlanetNix returned to Pasadena “co-located with SCaLE 23x” and was hosted “with the help of amazing Planetary Partners”, naming PDT Partners, Express VPN, Southern California Nix User Group, Anthropic and Numtide (https://flox.dev/blog/planetnix-2026-is-now-the-time-for-nix/). Community channels listed in the README are Slack and Discourse (https://raw.githubusercontent.com/flox/flox/main/README.md). Smaller touches: a 2025 sponsorship of the Rock Bottom Curling Club (https://flox.dev/blog/flox-named-exclusive-media-sponsor-of-the-rock-bottom-curling-clubs-2025-season/) and a listing on Redpoint’s InfraRed 100 (https://flox.dev/blog/flox-named-to-redpoints-infrared-100/).
Questions to be ready for
- “Is this the NixOS project?” No. Flox is a company building on Nix; the NixOS Foundation is a separate non-profit that Flox’s leadership has served on (see above) (https://flox.dev/blog/thank-you-nixcon/).
- “Who owns it?” Founded by Ron Efroni and Michael Brantley, spun out of the D. E. Shaw group, which remains an investor (https://flox.dev/blog/about-our-series-b/).
- “Can I read the code?” The CLI, yes (https://github.com/flox/flox). Hosted services, not stated [verify].
- “How much have they raised?” Not stated by Flox on the pages read [verify].
